Environmental Consulting
|
Environmental consultants play a diverse role in various resource extraction, construction, conservation, and research projects.
I worked for a consulting firm in Terrace, BC, for 2 years prior to starting grad school. We worked in partnership and closely with local First Nations (listed below), non-profit organizations, government agencies, and the public on various projects. Quick snapshot of activities: - Salmon stock assessments and spawning surveys - Environmental (e.g., water, air) monitoring of large- and small-scale construction projects (i.e., culvert and bridge replacements, stream channel maintenance, erosion protection, municipal drainage systems, mass wasting events) - Fish, amphibian, and invertebrate salvages using various techniques - Bird nest surveys - Project coordinating, permitting, and reporting This work was conducted on Haida, Taku River Tlingit, Haisla, Tahltan, Nisga'a, Gitxsan, and Tsimshian (Kitsumkalum, Kitselas, Lax Kw'Alaams, Metlakatla, Kitkatla, Gitga'at, and Kitasso) lands. |
Lakelse Watershed Stewards Society
As part of my consulting work, I had the honor of working with the Lakelse Watershed Stewards Society (LWSS), based out of Terrace, BC.
LWSS is a volunteer, non-profit organization that is committed to the environmental sustainability and conservation of the Lakelse watershed, south of Terrace. They partner with local First Nations, BC Parks, Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO), Terrace Search and Rescue (TSAR), Regional District of Kitimat-Stikine (RDKS), local biologists, and other non-profit organizations such as SkeenaWild to conduct projects and develop education programs for the public. Previous and ongoing projects include a study on heavy metal concentrations in freshwater mussels, habitat enhancement and restoration, coho and sockeye salmon enumeration on Schulbuckhand (Scully) Creek using an underwater camera, E.coli sampling, water quality monitoring of 15 tributaries to Lakelse Lake and the lake itself, interpretive walks and events, as well as the installation of interpretive signage along the Twin Spruce and Clearwater Lakes trails. This work is conducted on Tsimshian (Kitsumkalum, Kitselas, Lax Kw'Alaams, Metlakatla, Kitkatla, Gitga'at, and Kitasso) lands. |
